I’ll be honest, I can hardly watch the news anymore. I’ve talked with many people at Spirit of Life Church about this and it sounds like I’m not the only one. It’s incredible to see the increase of evil happening in our society today. In Matthew 24 Jesus talked about a rapid increase of lawlessness in the last days. Suffice to say, it’s here.
Recently I was reading 2 Peter 2 and was struck by the reference to Lot. I quickly realized that I had a lot in common with Lot. If you don’t remember his story you can read about it in Genesis 19. What struck me in Peter’s account of Lot was the “suffering” that he endured because of the lawlessness happening in his day.
“and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)” (2 Peter 2:7-8)
The phrase that struck me was “tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard”. Wow, that’s something I can relate to in our day. We’re living in difficult days and it’s tempting to lose heart, even when it seems that evil is triumphing.
The good news is, like Lot, God has a rescue plan for us. Peter goes on to say in verse 9:
“if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment.”
If you’re pursuing godliness and trusting in Jesus in these uncertain days, you are protected. God sees and He knows and He will watch over and keep you in these difficult days. The key is to abide in Jesus.
I want to encourage our church to remember that even though we may feel overwhelmed in these days, God has a rescue plan for us as we abide in Him.
